ARTOMATIC 2017 EXHIBIT
ARTIST REVIEWS
By: JULIO C. MARIÑO
Fine Arts Consultant

April 8, 2017: Artist Night at Artomatic 2017

As an arts consultant in the DC area with an extensive background in gallery management, art curation, and framing, I was asked to critique the work of three talented artists in order to enhance their future artistic endeavors and share with the public.

CHRISTOPHER HOPPE
Christopher Hoppe´s art take us by surprise because of the artistic value pursued in the different topics he develops.  His spirit is restless, unique and romantic at the same time.

It is quite evident that the daily environment surrounding this artist´s life affects his sensitive world view, leaving a lasting imprint of his particular world on us. I believe the aesthetic rules we live by are continuously being refined through art, so I can appreciate how deftly Christopher uses a spatula to seek out new expressions and attain deeply felt textures.

I felt Christopher’s work transmit a sense of joy and happiness, which make these special paintings a great future investment. Please see my photographs of Christopher's work below.

BENAIAH NORWOOD

BENAIAH ´s urban landscapes and characters expose the youthfulness of his soul, and indeed, he is only 23 years old. In a very colorful manner he depicts a very imaginative world which undeniably reflects his young personality.
BENAIAH shows merit and promise among contemporary artists.  We can appreciate the rich mixed technique used to attain beauty and strength with the decisive use of infrequent and strong strokes.

Significant values come through and are very successful.  His work reveals true potential if he continues to experiment.

CONSTANTINO BASTIDAS (TITO)

From the very first moment that I approached Constantino´s sculptures, I was very much impressed with their beauty and creativity.  Amazingly, he achieves all this “natural” effect out of discarded materials such as iron, cardboard, and treated wood.  Constantino’s masterful work is a delight to those who admire and appreciate bold originality and extraordinary skill.

Artomatic continues through May 6th. I encourage you to visit and see these and other talented artists before the exhibit ends.

Comments on Julio Verdie's Art illustrate influence on his own work

Julio Verdie and Julio Marino maintained a long and mutually influential friendship since they met in 1952. Marino staged an exhibition of Verdie's work in his gallery in 1989, and wrote the following describing his friend,

(TRANSLATION)
"Because friendship and painting brought Julio Verdie and I together, it is important for me to speak freely of my feelings today.

"Over the years I have been an observer of the spontaneity with which the artist has treated his subject; he always began with his favorite colors - the basics - first, staining the surface of the fabric or material to capture the essence while imagining the drawing that lay within.

"He created color with pure stains and quickly enriching them with fresh and elegant as textures if in two dimensions, He could isolate Color from the drawing and at the same time is drawing and form, that combination gave it his personality which so distinguished him as an artist.

"With this exhibition, today we have realized a thought which has matured over time into the virtuosity of a great artist."

Marino's commentary not only reflects his deep understanding of Verdie's work from the eyes of a gallerist, but is also very much reflected in his own work as an artist.

Past Exhibitions

It is not so surprising that in his long career amongst talented artists as a gallerist, framer and art restorer, that Julio developed his own artistic hand over the years.
